Air filter replacement

Engine and cabin air filter replacement in Sioux Falls, SD.

Two filters

Engine and cabin

We show you

The actual filter

Usually

Same visit

The short version

Two filters, two different jobs. The engine air filter protects the engine, the cabin air filter protects the people in it, and both get ignored until something smells or the mileage drops.

This is the service most often sold on sight rather than on condition. We will show you the filter that came out of your vehicle before we recommend anything, and if it has life left we will tell you that instead.

What you are noticing

Symptoms we see

The airflow from the vents is weak

Usually the cabin filter. It sits between the outside air and you, and when it plugs the fan works harder for less air.

There is a musty smell when the fan starts

A cabin filter that has been damp and has stayed damp. Replacing it fixes the symptom and removes what is growing on it.

Fuel economy dropped for no clear reason

A badly restricted engine air filter can contribute. It is worth ruling out because it is one of the cheapest things on the list.

You drive gravel roads or work sites

Dust loads a filter far faster than highway miles. If that is your driving, the standard interval is probably too long.

Allergy season is worse in the car than out of it

That is the cabin filter's whole purpose. A plugged one stops doing it.

How we handle it

The process

  1. Pull both filters and look at them

Engine and cabin. Condition rather than mileage decides whether they need replacing.

  2. Show you what came out

A photo of the actual filter from your vehicle. Dirty enough to matter looks different from dusty, and you should get to see which one you have.

  3. Fit the correct filter

The right part for the vehicle, seated properly, with the housing closed correctly so unfiltered air is not bypassing it.

  4. Note the interval for next time

Based on your driving rather than a generic number, so the next visit is a check rather than a guess.

Questions
How often do air filters need replacing?

Engine air filters commonly run fifteen to thirty thousand miles and cabin filters similar, though dusty driving shortens both considerably. We check them by condition when the vehicle is in.

Where is the cabin air filter?

On most vehicles behind the glove box or under the cowl. Access varies a lot, which is why it is often skipped by shops that would rather not spend the time.

Can a dirty air filter really affect fuel economy?

A badly restricted one can contribute. It is not usually the whole story, so we would not sell you a filter as the fix for a real economy problem without looking further.

Will you show me the old one?

Yes. That is the point. You should not have to take our word for a part you cannot see.
